Abstract
Having a strong interest in both education and cultural identity, I decided to study how these two factors interact. In addition, I was planning on studying in Thailand during the Spring Semester of 2004. Historically, education has been used as a method of cultural assimilation and I wanted to see what the function and consequence of education in Thailand were and specifically what effect the Thai education has on tribal Karen children. Therefore, I decided to combine these interests and opportunities and thus came to my thesis question: How does the Thai formal education system affect the cultural identity of the Karen hill tribe children of Thailand?
