Abstract

A recent letter to the editor (The Jakarta Post, April 8, 2006) claimed that "The only way to learn a language is from a native speaker." This is patently untrue, as evidenced by the millions of people all over the world in non-English speaking countries who speak English as a foreign language quite well as a result of having been taught by English teachers who are nonnative English speakers.
