Abstract
Fides House, named after the Latin word for "faith," was a Catholic neighborhood house affiliated with the Department of Sociology of the Catholic University of America from 1940 to 1973. At Fides House, sociologists, nurses, and students lived, studied, and served the low-income community of lower Northwest Washington, D.C. Fides House became an unusual laboratory, one where spirituality shaped a unique style of scholarly activity. This activity produced last- ing contributions both to the lives of neighborhood residents and to the larger scholarly and social work communities.
