Abstract

The Rose - Ola Gjeilo Ola Gjeilo (YAY-loh) (b. 1978) is a pianist and composer who specializes in choral music. Born in Skui, Norway (west of Oslo), Gjeilo was immersed in music from a young age and began playing piano and composing at five years old.1 He obtained his bachelor’s degree in composition through studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1999-2001), The Juilliard School (2001), and the Royal College of Music, London (2002-2004). In 2006, he received a master’s degree in composition from Juilliard.2 His influences include a wide array of artists - Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Thomas Newman, Dale Chihuly, and Frank Gehry - and musical interests that span from classical to pop, folk, and jazz.3 Gjeilo is currently a freelance composer in Manhattan, NY, and is composer-in-residence with DCINY and Albany Pro Musica.4 He has collaborated with Charles Anthony Silvestri, Voces8, and Tenebrae, among others.5 Notable compositions include Ubi Caritas, The Lake Isle, Sunrise Mass, and Dreamweaver.
