Virginia Woolf, one of the great British modernist writers, argues that when we read, we “extend our intercourse beyond our own time and province” (“Montaigne” 64) and that we “have not finished with” a poem, essay or novel “because [we] have read it, any more than friendship is ended because it is time to part” (“The Modern Essay” 217)...
