Abstract

Sight singing is an essential part of quality choral music making, yet is commonly neglected in schools. In fact, Stephen Demorest’s 1998 literature review on sight singing included a quote from a 1957 survey that supported the claim that sight singing is a missing component of many choral music programs because “secondary choral programs emphasize performance and rote teaching at the expense of developing music reading” (Demorest, 1998, p. 1). Low rates of practicing sight singing in the classroom are not new, but modern research on sight singing and music literacy has grown to include technology and social emotional learning. This literature review includes information on sight singing and music literacy philosophies, curricula, repertoire and teaching strategies. The purpose of this review is to provide choral music educators with an updated list of resources, advocacy information and solutions to challenges on the topic of sight singing and music reading.
