Description

A Story Map featuring eight historical African American figures of the 19th century. The Story Map uses video of the Pennsylvania Past Players, as well as textual descriptions, to highlight the lives of these prominent individuals, their connection to Central Pennsylvania, and their fight for equity, parity, and justice across the Commonwealth, region, and country. The Story Map serves as a virtual tour of sorts, helping to bring those near and far with histories gone unnoticed along the T. Morris Chester Way.

This Story Map was developed through the collaboration of the T. Morris Chester Welcome Center and Research Collection at the McCormick Riverfront Library, Messiah University’s Center for Public Humanities, and the Center for Applied Environmental and Geospatial Technology at Harrisburg University. The Story Map is part of a broader collaborative initiative, “The Chester Way: Stories of Freedom, Equity, and Justice in Pennsylvania’s Capital Region,” which centers around the 'way' of Thomas Morris Chester, the highly respected Black journalist, soldier, lawyer, and civil rights proponent in the U.S. and wider world in the 19th century.

This item was developed and published in collaboration with the IIPT-Commonwealth Monument Project, with support and funding from Messiah University's Center for Public Humanities and the Council of Independent College's Humanities Research for the Public Good Grant Program.
